As a last resort the "Terry" and "Ribbon" conspiracies made their appearances in Galway as well as in other parts of Ireland. Beyond nocturnal visits to houses in search of old guns, generally useless, no crime can be traced to the members, excepting the Peeler's Bush incident.The Peeler's Bush is situated in a lovely spot on the public road half way between Prospect and Pass. Mr. Thomas Dermody of Muckanagh was so kind as to furnish the following particulars which he procured from the old residents of the district. One Sunday evening in May 1835, David Crosbie, who was a policeman, stationed at Ballycrissane near Portumna, came to Eyrecourt to see his wife and have his child baptized. Unfortunately, he drank freely with his old friends in the town where for a long time he had been stationed. He had with him a very old musket without a lock. Some of the people whom he met could not help noticing the old gun, probably on account of its dilapidated condition, and more than one inquired if he carried that useless weapon for protection.
