  1. Long ago the old people used to have great amusement by meeting at cross roads and having a contest about weight throwing or any other games. There was a man named old Michael Walsh of Old Thort and he was never without employment from the beginning to the end of the hay-cutting season. It was no trouble to him to mow two acres of hay in the day with a scythe. Another man named Michael Hara was equally as good at the mowing of hay, this man lived about a mile from the town of Portumna in a place called Cloganna. Dan Flannery was another great mower and he was always called "Ann Flann" by the people around Red-Wood. There was a cycling club in Portumna about forty years ago. My grand Uncle John Jo Burke was one of the best of them in it that time. On one occasion when he was after winning a great deal of prizes he said he would get one of the penny-farthing bicycles. That time no one had those kind of bicycles. When he got it he won prizes.
