- The kind of houses that were long ago were very small. And were always built down in holes fearing the wind would knock them. They were all thatched. The straw was grown. They rich people thatched with straw. The poor people thatched with scraws and weed. The houses contained of room and a kitchen. Long ago the old people had a bed in the kitchen.
