My cousin and I, a boy two years elder than myself about fifty years ago paid a visit to my grandfather's house. He lived in Monivea in a small thatched house with loft overhead, while there we were sent on a message to a tailor who lived in the district. It was a cold, nippy evening during Xmas week.
Night fell suddenly and we were undecided whether to take the cross cut or the road, we choose the former, however. When we left the road we turned in a boreen with a high wall on one side. Suddenly we thought we saw a strange figure come through the wall and almost jumped on my feet. We both ran like the wind for our lives never speaking a word until we arrived at my grandfather's house.
They were in bed and some potatoes "roasters" laid beside the fire for our supper. We could neither eat or speak but stole up in the loft to bed leaving the lamp lighting on the kitchen floor, so that no fairy could catch us going up the old stairs.
