1. The Big House

   I don't know who built the "Big House" of Aughacashel, nor neither do I know when it was built. All I know is that there was a devil of an army Captain living there at one time. The only way I can place that time is that there was a Captain McNamara living in Letterfine, Keshcarrigan at the same time. McNamara was a Catholic, and a fine gentleman. He was a member of the Old Irish House of Commons, I heard, and he was a great shot with a pistol.
   The other Captain was a Protestant and a proper ruffian. He used to get up on his horse on a Sunday and ride down to Drumcong - 5 miles away - when the people were gathered there at Mass, and he used to ride through those of them who had to remain outside the chapel as it was too small for the big congregation then. He did this on several occasions, till at last McNamara heard of it, and he told him if he ever did so again he'd riddle
