  1. In 608 a monastery was founded at Mohill, on the site of which now stands the Protestant Church. It was founded by St. Monaghan. A great feast was held on 25th February every year. Then people began to buy and sell on that day.
Through time the feast was discontinued but the fair became a noted one and it is observed to this day.
It is called the “Monaghan Fair” and is considered to be the best fair of the year in Mohill.
The abbey was dissolved in 1641 and given to Hey. Crofton.
