- The O'Reilly's of Augharan.The great Breffni family of the O'Reillys had a castle at Augharan in the parish of Augharas Co. Leitrim. They lived there for many generations The castle was built near to Augharan lake and the stones of il were used when Parson Eager made "Eager's Broad Road" about 100 or more years ago. That is the road that goes from Mohill to Carrigallen. It is a remarkably broad road and it was said that Parson Eager who was the engineer in charge, made it so wide just to take land off the poor people along the way. He went specially out of his way to include ancient ruins and cromlechs and burial stones in the road material and that is the reason that there are no remains of Augharan Castle to be seen now. There lived one of these OReillys at Augharan in the time of Cromwell, and il is said that he had charge of all this area for Owen Roe ONeill. He drilled men all along the way(continues on next page)
