- Long ago in this district the people had certain beliefs about the weather. If the sun looked pale in the evening or if there was a bright ring around the moon rain was expected. If the clouds looked dark or if the distant hills looked near or if the rainbow spanned the sky. Rain was not far away. If the sea-gulls flew low rain was expected. If the dog left his mutton bone and went snapping grass or if the car turned his back to the fire rain was expected. When the sheep that were grazing on top of the mountain came down to the bottom of the mountain rain was sure to come. The west wind brings the most rain in this district. Midges are also a sign of rain. When the soot falls we can also expect rain.
