- The Battle of Ovidstown was fought during the '98 Rising. Ovidstown is near Prosperous.
Captain Farrell of Blackwood, Prosperous was a Lieutenant in the French Army. He was in charge of the insurgents at the battle of Prosperous. There were various O'Hanlons in the United Irishmen from the area all round Kildare. Cox mentioned in the Song, was a yeoman who threw in his lot with the insurgents. Bourke I have heard was a blacksmith whose weapon was a sledge hammer.
I
Oh Mary fetch my coat of green
Its nigh the break of day
Its a renegade my name should be
Or here at home I'd stay.
Our ancient race into disgrace
Shall ne'er be brought by me
So Im away to Ovidstown
To fight for Liberty
Chorus
With Pike and Scian and Sash of Green
Those emblems are for me
So Im away to Ovidstown
To fight for Liberty
