- Blacksmith long ago were more plentiful than now. In the country the people made coal for the smiths by half burning turf and wood and throwing water when it was well on fire. The smiths used to collect all the old iron and make horse shoes out of it. They used to make boys the farmers instead of spades. The boy would last as long as the three spades. The boy differed from the spade by having only one step (called the bróigín)(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
