The people used to have oatmeal and water and those who could not afford it had to go out in the morning and eat water cress and salt and if they had milk they would come in and drink it but if they hadn't they would drink water.
She told me also that the poor people could get no credit from traders. The crops were not plentiful and they were sold to pay the rent because the Landlord would evict if rent wasn't paid. It was much higher then than now. The famine and fever stalked the country.
She told me that in 1848 the blight was even more bitter than the year before. The leaders of the country were cast into prison, and the country was left in a state of ruin. Thousands of people died of hunger and fever along roads. There were no coffins and the people were buried(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
