   There were very few kinds of potatoes grown in Ireland at that time. The "Lumper" a potato was grown chiefly by the poorer people. In the year 1845 the potato crop was very bad. The potatoes were all rotten and diseased, and in the year 1846 the potatoes were very small. Potatoes and oats were the main food the people had. Half of the people would have died with hunger only they got relief meal for the making of broth. In a lot of cases they were supplied with broth at a certain place, each one getting so much according to his needs. All the workhouses were filled with people because they had nothing to eat, so they had to go into them. It took three or four men to dig as many potatoes as would do for the
