    There are very few people living now who know very much about the famine that happened in the year 1845-46. There were very few kinds of potatoes grown in Ireland at that time. The "Lumper" a potatoe was grown chiefly by the poorer people. In the year 1845 the potato crop was very bad. The potatoes were all rotten and diseased and in the year 1846 the potatoes were very small. Potatoes and oats were the main food the people had. Half of the people would have died with hunger only they got relief meal
