- Basket-making is a craft that is no longer carried on in this district. Long ago baskets were generally is use. Early potatoes were shipped in baskets, vegetables were packed in baskets and cows were fed in baskets. Baskets are now completely done away with, and their place is taken by barrels and cribs.
Baskets were made from light sally rods. These rods had to be pulled in Autumn when there was no sap in them, so that they could bend without breaking.
The basket maker went from house to house where the work had to be done. He usually slept in the house at night until his work was done. He(continues on next page)
