- Long ago I used to hear my grandfather talk about it the people had no ploughes they used to plough with the spade. The spade was one of the principal instruments for the farmers long ago. The people would have no tea only at Christmas and then they would only buy a half quarter of tea. They used have potatoes and Indian-meal stirabout for every meal. They had no flour either but they made the bread with oatmeal. They would buy a little flour at Christmas. They used to make skibs and throw out the potatoes on the skib and leave it in the middle of the floor and each person would sit down on the floor around the skib and eat them with a mug of buttermilk, they had no bacon or cabbage.
