- The hand-loom was made of strong timber was 8 feet long and 6 feet wide.
The 4 ports or uprights were about 1 foot in circumference.
There were two cross-bars placed in position.
Around them was rolled the yarn which was spun and made by the women from wool.
The bars were 5 feet apart.
Over the bars was placed a square of net-work 3 feet square through which the threads were passed and fastened around the cross-bars.
These threads are called the warp. The shuttle was about 1 foot long - boat - shaped to hold the spool of thread. The weaver sat in front - he passed the shuttle from side to side - after every few passes he pressed small weights attached to a piece of wood with his feet, thus pressing the woven material together.
