- There once lived a man and at break of day he went out to cut an armful of green grass for his horse. He happened to have the four leaved shamrock in it, and they say if you get the four leaved shamrock you will know what the cocks are saying.
He did not know he had it as he went along he heard the cocks crowing. One cock said "Mary Lee is dead" "small loss" said the second cock "That she may never rise" said the third cock. When the man came near his house he met a fairy man who said to him "Will you sell me that armful of grass and instead I will give you the price of a stone of oats?"
When he sold it he could only hear the cocks saying "Cock-a-doodle-doo".
