- Potatoes are grown abundantly in this district. Everybody plants at least one acre. They were needed when pigs and fowl are being reared. All the land is manured with farmyard manure.
Most potatoes are sown in drills.
When you are making ridges you have to give 7 scrapes each time. Each drill must be 7 inches wide. The "Henshaw" spade is generally used. When potatoes begin to come up, the farmer must mould them with a shovel and a plough. He then sprays them in case of blight. In October he digs them.
