- Long ago poor people went around in search of food, clothing and lodging.
They always travelled on foot. Generally the alms they accepted were potatoes and meal. When my mother was a child a woman named "Molly Staunton" went around. She stayed one night in each house and in summer-time slept in the open air. This woman often slept in Patrick Rourke's house of Ummeraroe. The people provided her with food but she got money besides with which she bought drink. This woman also gathered small quantities of meal which she stored up in sacks and sold at the nearest market.
Other well known people went around and go nowadays in some parts. These are known as peddlers who buy jewelery, rings, brooches, whistles, badges and sell them again at a profit. They went around one by one each man doing for himself. They were fairly well off, had good clothing and were able to buy good food. All they wanted was the shelter of the house.
