- In olden times the habitations of the people were very bad and unhealthy. The houses in which they lived were made of mud, stones and timber with flat roofs. The houses made of mud were called mud wall cabins. A square hole in the wall was left for a window when building the house. To this a piece of wood was connected to close the window at nighttime because in that time robbers were very frequent and also the people depended on very little ventilation. The fire was at the end of the gable and there was no chimney only a hole in the roof. On the top of the hole was a tin can out of which the bottom was taken to let out the smoke.
