   Once he sought the French assistance to defeat the English here
   But the expedition failing left us subject sad and drear,
   In the tempest in the battle courting death by day and night
   Last great soldier spoke and struggled for his suffering nation right -
   For the might of priest and layman for the right of church and state
   Now a martyr's crown hes wearing as he's past his earthy fate,
   Never shall sweet memory fail us never shall our love grow dim,
   But like fires so oft rekindled gladly shall we think of him,
   With the Gaels from every county on the 19th day of June
   I have seen and honour given which I'll not forget so soon,
   Twas a dream of future Ireland, till the Summer's sun went down,
   On that day of rebel spirit in that dear old Bodenstown
