    My grandmother made her own candles and the way she used to make them was....

    too there was atax on every window in the house, that is, about ninety years ago. My grandmother had to close up the back window altogether as she could not pay the tax and then according to the size of the window the tax was heavier so that half of the kitchen window was also closed up. At night time then the kitchen was very dark and even in the day time. Of course in the Summer time all would go to bed with daylight so that the rush lights would never be burned except in the winter time.
