    custom to go into a shop and ask for a pair of shoes a certain size instead, our ancestors had to go to a local shoemaker who took their measure and had the shoes ready at some future date. There was one or two of these in each locality. All their work was hand-sown. The coming of the shoe factories put an end to their trade. Handmade shoes are now rare indeed. The former shoe maker has turned into a cobbler.
