    Once upon a time there was a king who had twelve beautiful daughters.

    chamber next to the room where the twelve daughters lay in their beds. there he was to sit and watch where they went to dance, and in order nothing might pass without him hearing it. The door of he chamber was left open. He soon fell asleep, and when he awoke in the morning he found that all the daughters were dancing. Their shoes were worn, and full of holes. The same thing happened the second and third night. The king ordered his head to be cut off.
    After him came several others, and the same thing happened and they all lost their lives in the same manner. now it chanced that an old soldier who had been wounded in battle and could fight no longer passed through the country where
