- The bad times were very hard in this country especially in the famine days. They did not press so much in this locality. The potatoes failed in the time of the famine. They had to get the seed from foreign countries the next year. The poor people suffered very much in those days. They used to live chiefly on stirabout and turnips. There was a man in Coolbagh and he got a donkey washed ashore in the River Blackwater and he brought him home and ate him. Four starving men came into a house in the time of the famine. There was a pot of stirabout boiled for the pigs and they ate it all.
