- The district around here has very for historical associations as it seems the greater part of the struggle of the land war and Penal Days was confined to other parts of Ireland.
There is a place called Corrig Mara in the parish of Killargue where it is believed a fierce battle was fought against the yeomen.
A local man named Martin O'Rourke was quarrying stone some years ago and he unearthed a lot of human bones and skulls which were believed to belong to the men who fell in the battle.
The local chieftain of this district was Sit Frederick Hamilton and he resided in Manorhaven which takes its name from him. He was a great tyrant and the people out of revenge for his misdeeds took courage and burned his castle to the ground.
Another noted character of the Penal days was Lord Leitrim. He was coming one morning in May to carr out evictions in Manorhamilton when he was met on the road by four armed men. As he wore a suit of mail they could not shoot him so they pulled him from his carriage and battered him to death with the bulls of their guns. This was about the(continues on next page)- Collector
