St Columcille had great love for thy birds also. Once when he was in Tona he told the Brother in charge of the guest house that he was expecting a visitor from Ireland. When the Brother went down to the shore a poor crane fell at his feet exhausted after its long jouney from Ireland. On Columcille's request it was taken to the monastery and carefully tended for a day or two when it flew off again to Ireland.
St Colman once helped a little lad in the West whose work was to drive the birds from teh crops. On a hot day the lad was tired for he had been at work since dawn. He prayed to St Coleman. it is said that the Saint then called all the birds of the air into a big barn and kept them there through the heat of the day, while the little lad slept in the field.
