There was a Protestant school at Hollybrook. It was built of wood. All the Protestants of Ballinafad and of this locality attended it. It is not known who taught in it. There was another hedge school in Drumdoney. A good number of people were taught at it. The people of Drumdoney and of this locality went to it. They did not pay any money to be educated but the rich people brought presents to the teacher. Slates were also used at this time. After a year or so the teacher died and on that account there was no teacher to teach the pupils. The teacher that taught in it was a Master Gaffney,
In an early period a school was held in Carrowkeel. It was one of the places in Ireland in which the Fir Bolg lived. There came a number of planters to Hollybrook. When they came they drove the Healys out of it. At that time the Healys had Hollybrook to themselves. They had to flee to the mountains. A Master Keaney went up to the mountains and taught the Healys there, and he taught other families that lived on the hilltops also. After some time that(continues on next page)- Collector
