    The French have come at last.

    It gladdens my poor bosom
    And it almost makes me young
    To think upon the glories of that day
    When first I saw the flags of France
    And Ireland side by side
    High waving o'er Killala's lovely bay.

    Our arms were shining brightly
    From our ranks there rose a cheer
    As beneath that golden we took our stand
    We walked together onwards
    Neath that flag of golden green
    To battle for the freedom or our land

    We chased the saxon soldiers
    From Killala's ancient town
    They fled before our forces near and far
    Through Mayo's fertile valleys
    By the Moy's transparent stream
    Till we halted on the plains of Castlebar.

    We met them there defeated
    Through the vengeance of our charge
    Those haughty saxon soldiers could not
