Local Forges.
There are six forges in our parish.I only know one of the smiths. His father was not a blacksmith but a farmer. The name of this blacksmith is John Sherry of Ballinode. The forge is nearly always situated at a crossroads because people coming from each direction can get their horses shod.
Smiths fix ploughs and farming implements in the open air.It is said that no matter how tired the smith is if he washes his hands in the forge water it revives him.The smiths are always looked upon as being very strong.People gather into the forge at night to tell ghost stories and tales of every kind.- Collector
