- Some time ago people used to make their own thread out of wool. First they used to send the wool to a mill and get it made on to cards. Every house had a spinning-wheel. Before the wool was put on the cards it was greased and oiled, and then put into the machinery in the mill. Then it was brought home and the woman of the house spun it on the spinning-wheel and made it into thread.
