  1. In olden times the people had many simple but effective remedies for their ills. Doctors would not be called on except in extreme case's
    For colds oat-meal gruel was the remedy. For coughs fax-seen made in a syrup was the remedy.
    For a sore throat common salt heated in a stocking and applied to the neck.
    For the mumps, "Fellesters boiled and put to the neck. For abscesses ground ivy leaves and fresh butter were boiled together and made into an ointment. For the cure of warts snails were the remedy.
