He fits it on the horse's hoof. Then he makes holes for the nails, and nails it on the horse's hoof. When he has the shoes on, he rasps the tops of the nails.
Long ago not only did the smith make shoes, but nails also, but now the nails are made in factories. The smith charges four or five shillings for shoeing a horse.
