- Candle-making In olden times the people of this district made their own candles. These candles were called 'Dips'. Rushes were peeled and dried well. Tallow was melted on an iron vessel like a tiny boat called a grisset and rushes were dipped into it. They were stretched on the table till they got firm.
They also made candles from stripes of cloth. The strips of cloth were dipped into tallow and left to dry. Special candle-sticks were made for holding these candles. This candle-stick was made almost like a pincers.
