- (continued from previous page)In the townland of Ballycumisk, a family lives by the name of O'Brien, who possess a hereditary gift of bone-setting. In this family there were two brothers and a sister. The sister who is now dead used to set the bones of children but was not strong enough to set these of adults. The brothers Michael and Jeremiah are very clever bone-setters, and on several occasions have cured cases of limbs which doctors have failed to do, after having the patients several weeks in hospital with the broken limbs in plaster- of - Paris.
The O'Briens use no plaster - of - Paris in their treatment only bandages and splints. They set arms and legs by extending the limbs at fist and then with a sudden jerk in the right direction, they manage to get the damaged bone into its right position. In case of a patient suffering from a broken hip, they set it by putting the patient sitting on a chair with his or her two feet on the floor. In case of a broken hip, one leg is at least six inches shorter than the other, then with a sudden jerk, the bone-setter(continues on next page)- Collector
