    There was a great chieftain named Mc.Carthy Mór in this locality about three hundred and seventy years ago. It was he built the "Old Court", Banteer Road, Kanturk. It is said, that he killed many men.
    There was also a great battle fought in the year 1647 at Knocknanus, Kanturk. Pieces of swords and daggers and other things were often found there.
    In the Penal Days many hedge-schools were in this district.
    Cromwell is supposed to have passed through Kanturk. There are stepping stones crossing the river Beauty near Kanturk, and on one stone there is a footprint, and it is said, that
