In the eastern end of Spike Island the very old people used to say that smugglers gold was buried there and that a black man was slain on the spot in order that his spirit should guard the treasure. It was in 1850 or so that the convict prison was built there for Irish offenders Among the prisoners there was John Mitchel but he was only there a short time.- A the time of the Fenian War there was a barrack at the foot of hill in Walterstown where the prisoners were kept and they used to be taken to the top of this hill to be hanged and then it was called "Bloody Hill" on account of this.
