    turf. The light they had was candles. The candles were made by themselves from the fat of animals such as cows.

  2. There were alot of old houses throughout the country long ago, but new cottages are built in their places now. These houses were mostly thatched for the people were poor and they could not afford any other kind of roofs and the thatch was the cheapest.
    The slate roofs were not popular in those days, but the rich people got slate out of quarries in their own land, or in other peoples' land.
