- The most common weeds found in our farm are dock root corn kale, chicken weed ground sell, wild parsnip, sage, nettles clover thistles, dandelion [?] .
Nettles thistles, briars, corn kale, dock root ground sell, rushes, grow in rich soil.
Wild sage, furze, heather, dandelion grow in poor soil. Dandelion known locally as caisearbhán has medicinal properties. The root boiled cures liver complaints and purifies the blood. If wild sage is boiled in water it is also a good blood purifier. Nettles are supposed to be good too, old people say that if you have 3 meals of nettles in May you will not be ill for the rest of the year. Dandelion was used as a cure for people suffering from bad stomach. Heather is said to cure many disease. Goose grass roots was long ago used for making medicine and the farmers used to get six pounds a ton for this valuable weed. An old remedy for ring worm is dock roots boiled with lard(continues on next page)- Collector
