    get money which they used to spend afterwards on a big bonfire.
    In other parts of Clare they used to make a cross of straw and bring it into the house and hang it up in the thatch. This was supposed to be a protection form fire.
    It is counted unlucky to take down the holly at Christmas until after "Little Christmas day". On May Day it is said to be unlucky to pick flowers or to bring in the white-thorn. The May-water is sprinkled over the cattle and the land of farmers to make them prosper.
