    The children gathered sloes and alder berries in large baskets and these were washed and put in a sunny place to dry. Then they were soaked in black sugar for a few hours and then put into a preserving pan to simmer away till a dark ruby colour. They were then put into muslin bag and left drain overnight into a large jar and last of all put into bottles, corked and sealed and stored away till wanted for use.
