   During the year 1847-1848 there was a great famine throughout the whole country. People had nothing to eat. The potatoes were black. Many people died of hunger in this parish. One man named Mr. Donavan died with hunger. He was working at the Shannon Banks and he died during his work. The people had to sell the wheat to pay the rent. People made their own butter and sold it. It was very expensive. People ought to be glad nowadays that they have plenty food and clothes.
