Long ago children never wore shoes until they were about twenty years. When they washed their feet at nightime they never threw out the water. Some people put a red spark in it and leave it inside 'til morning, others raked out the fire and spilled the water behind it. Why this is done is this,
Once upon a time, late one night there came to a house a certain holy-man who was being pursued by enemies. He had walked a good deal and his feet were swollen, cut and tired. He asked some water in a basin and he washed his feet.
After a while they all went to bed. Soon they heard a knock at the door. On opening the door they recognised the men as the holyman's pursuers.
They asked if the holy man was inside and they said "No" The water spoke and said that he was. So they got him and killed him.
