The history of Spike Island in 1921 where political prisioners were held was related by a prisoner himself who spent some time there. There were about 600 men there.
One day a game of hurling was in progress when the ball rolled under the barbed wire. A man went to get it and a sentry fired a shot and the man was mortally wounded. It caused great trouble among the prisoners. The result was that they tore down all they could of windows and ripped up beds and boards and fought the soldiers who were better armed(continues on next page)- Informant
