- The Local Forge
My ancestors for several generations owned a black-smith's shop at Tankerstown. The first man to work it was a man named John D'arcy. The forge is built a hundred an seventeen years. There were five generations of Smiths in the D'arcy family. The first forge was a thatched one with mud walls. it was built a hundred and seventeen years ago. There is a cure in forge-water, it is a cure for rickets in children.
My ancestors held the forge on the condition that they shod the landlords horses free.
The forge is now a ruin as we have gone to live in one of the new cottages in the next townland and my father does not work at the trade.- Collector
