One winter's night when all the neighbours were gathered round Mick Bourke's fire-side they were all telling tales.

3 One winter's night when all the neighbours were gathered round Mick Bourke's fire-side they were all telling tales. John Purcell being the ring-leader they all proposed that he should tell a tale. "Well will you wait till I put a bit in the pipe and I will tell you a true one" said he.
"Ye all know the old rath on the road leading to Knockjack" said he "and all the tales that were about it, and how the hare stood up on his hind legs and said to the gun-man, shoot me if you dare". "Well said John "how nicely I got around them". I was working with the man who owned the land under the rath. I was cutting firewood which ws of little use As I said to the boss, "Why dont you cut those yonder" pointing to the rath. "DOn't mind them" he said "for if you do something might happen to you". "Musha" said I to him. "I will have a go at it after dinner". Before dinner I walked into the rath, hung up my cap on a tree and said "gentlemen or ladies or whoever you are if it is any harm to cut these have this cap removed when I come back". When I came back it was not removed so I seized the hatchet and cut all round me Nothing happened and I am still hale and hearty"
