- Candle-makers
Longago there were many old trades such as candle making, basket-making, weaving, smith-work and thatching. The candle-makers in this district were:
Pat McDonnell; Andrew McDonnell and Annie O'Bonnors. Any day they would go to town they would get a supply of tallow from the butcher. Then they would start making the candles when they would come home or very often they would wait until a wet day.
They used melt the tallow in a pot they used call a "grisset". Then they used get a mould and tie the wick to the top and bottom. The tallow used to be poured all round the wick and left until it would harden. The wick used be made from the wool of the sheep.
Basket-makers
Basket-making was another trade longago. The names of some of the basket makers were:
Michael Egan of Mullagh; Michael Kelly Clogher and Patrick Hehir Clohanmore.
