   When the potatoes failed the people lived on turnips, bean bread, meal, cabbage and cabbage stumps, nettles, and even grass.
   The landlords of the district were not very sympathetic towards the poor. They resorted to the hiring of men with guns to prevent the poor "darting" in the gardens for potatoes and turnip roots.
   There was a very kindhearted family in Moyglass name Peadar Máire Sexton and his wife, whose maiden name was Donlan. Mrs Sexton was very kind to the poor and distribute potatoes among them. The husband noticed that his potatoes were disappearing fast and so as to save what he wanted for himself he decided that he'd give his wife a certain amount every day for distribution among the poor who called. Every morning he filled a 10 stone basket and left it to her in the kitchen. He continued to do this until he had left only what he required for their own use and for seed for the following spring. Even after the supply of potatoes was exhausted the poor continued to call
