- There are so many Mullens in Knocklore that they all had nicknames. A cousin of Tavish, James, who still lives and is about ninety, was named "Buckskin," because, it is said, he once wore a pair of buckskin breeches.
Once James had a particularly good crop of barley. One day he and Tavish went to the cornfield to select the best sheaf for exhibition at the Dundalk show.
"I think this is the best sheaf, Tavish, "said James, after several sheaves had been handled and closely examined.
"No, James, "said Tavish, "I'll gamble this sheaf in my hand is the best."
"Well, I'll take my own pick," said James.
"All right, "replied Tavish; "I'll take my pick." And they each took a sheaf.
The Judges' decision was:-
For Best Sheaf of Barley:
1st, Thomas Mullen, Knocklore.
2nd, James Mullen, Knocklore.
