- Candles were made from rushes and a fat called Tallow. They got the rushes, and dried them, then they got the grease, and melted it, they had a vessel for melting it in. Then they got the rushes and dipped them in the grease. They were then left on a small board over the fire, until they got dry. Then they were fit for use. They had a small stand for putting the candle in when it was lighting, it had three legs on it and a kind of pincers.
